The project is based on research into buildings by Werkgruppe 7 in Cologne, an association of young architects in Cologne in the 1960s and 70s.The buildings of the Werkgruppe are remarkable both in terms of their genesis in the sense of a shared authorship and in terms of their structural and architectural qualities, but have been little illuminated until now.Three educational buildings of the work group, which were built between 1972 and 1977, will be examined in the course of the project in the sense of a case study.
One of the buildings, the Hochschule für Musik und Tanz in Cologne, is still largely in its original condition and has been listed as a historical monument in recent years. The second building, the large-scale Niederpleis school center between Cologne and Bonn, is still recognizable in its basic structure, but has undergone numerous alterations and modifications, making it difficult to recognize the original design idea.
The third building, the Rodenkirchen Comprehensive High School in the south of Cologne, was demolished in 2009, although the original plans and photos reveal an innovative and still contemporary spatial concept in the sense of a flexible, open learning landscape. All three buildings are typologically comparable with each other as school buildings, but each has specific and clearly distinguishable spatial ideas.
